oA Alliance at COP27

COP27 took place between 6 – 18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Described as the “implementation COP” the Egyptian Presidency was focused on ambitious implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and GHG emission reduction targets, while also delivering on adaptation priorities that are science-based and responsive to regional, country and community needs.

The ocean-climate community understands we must increase urgency for mitigation and strengthen ocean-climate action across international policy processes, including the UNFCCC. A number of ocean and coastal community events occurred across both weeks of COP27, including on “Ocean Action Day” on November 16.

Additional emphasis was placed on carrying forward key recommendations to the UNFCCC Ocean and Climate Dialogue in 2023. You can read the summary from this year’s Ocean and Climate Dialogue here.

Responding to the focus on implementation, OA Alliance government and affiliate members engaged across a number of events & negotiations to:

  • Accelerate GHG reduction commitments by 2030.

  • Emphasize ocean adaptation and resilience needs.

  • Increase finance and technical capacity for ocean & coastal efforts.

  • Showcase implementation of OA Action Plans, including examples of climate-ocean policy integration and regional collaboration.
