Webinar: Ocean Acidification and Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal

Halting the ongoing release of Anthropogenic carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions is the first and most important action needed to combat climate change and ocean acidification. Increasingly, governments are being asked to consider marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) strategies as part of broader CDR agendas and as a direct response to ocean acidification.

To support government members of the OA Alliance who are navigating this nexus, the OA Alliance will release and discuss materials to help them understand the links between mCDR and OA— particularly, the state of the science, as well as how particular actions might achieve specific desired goals.

It is critical that governments are able to articulate the specific outcomes they may be seeking from mCDR strategies, as well as articulate any concerns, vulnerabilities, or capacity needs for evaluation.

We are looking forward to a meaningful conversation with invited guests:

  • Dr. Annika Frosch, University College London/ OA Alliance

  • Dr. Amanda Carter, Ph.D., Director of Climate Science, Ocean Conservancy

  • Dr. Adam Subhas, Associate Scientist, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

  • Dr. Janet Reimer, Ocean Science Program Manager, Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean (MARCO)

  • Ms. Diane Hoskins, Director, Carbon to Sea Initiative

Topics we’ll look into include:

  • Emergent questions coming from governments.

  • Perspectives from environmental NGO communiities.

  • Relationship between OA and ocean alkalinity enhancment: the possible benefits, risks and needs for co-design in research.

  • Role of acidification networks (local and global) in informing research and field experiments.

  • Notable projects/ grants available for those interested in this work.

Join the conversation with leading experts across policy, science, and practice.
