Edith (Edie) Mari helps guide the strategic direction of the OA Alliance by implementing the organization’s core programs and developing engaging communication campaigns with affiliate members and partners. Through the U.S. State Working Group, Edie works with State agencies to advance domestic OA action toward achieving climate-ocean mitigation, adaptation, and resilience goals. At the international level, Edie has contributed heavily to the development of the OARS Decision Making Framework under the UN Decade of Ocean Science, and continues to develop case studies to showcase OA research efforts around the globe. Edie specializes in synthesizing research to make climate-ocean science accessible and captivating, as highlighted by her leadership in developing Exploring Our Changing Ocean and ongoing collaboration with aquaria across the nation.
With over 15 years of experience in community engagement in social justice, performing arts, and climate literacy, she brings a multidisciplinary perspective to her work with the OA Alliance. She holds advanced degrees in Environmental Science and Emergency Management, and has studied Traditional Ecological Knowledge under some of the world’s foremost Indigenous activists and scholars. Edie is serious about challenging narratives that perpetuate systemic harm, and she prioritizes developing relationships with others who are practicing community accountability and cultivating emergent strategy.
