María Alejandra Navarrete Hernández
In her role at the OA Alliance, María Alejandra Navarrete Hernández supports the UN Ocean Decade OARS program, helping shape regional strategy on ocean acidification.
Alejandra holds an LL.M. in Environmental Law from The George Washington University and is a LEAD Fellow. She is currently a consultant at The Ocean Foundation, serving as Government and Multilateral Liaison Officer. Her policy work focuses on frameworks to restore mangroves, seagrasses, and corals across the Wider Caribbean within the SPAW Protocol area.
Over the past five years, Alejandra has partnered with CINVESTAV, INECC, and WRI México to advance NDC implementation, develop a blue-carbon baseline for the Gulf of Mexico, and design ecosystem-based adaptation tools for mangrove restoration. For two decades, she has advised ministers in Mexico’s Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Fisheries on policy issues, presidential decrees establishing protected areas, and management programs affecting protected areas and ocean governance.
