Thank you to everyone who participated in the OA Alliance Launch Event on December 13th in Coronado, California. We had an impressive turn-out of OA Alliance members and supporters, gathered to provide momentum and leadership on this challenge.
Formal remarks were given by the following United States and international leaders:
- California Governor Jerry Brown
- California Secretary for Natural Resources, John Laird
- Patricio Utreras, Deputy Chief of Mission at Embassy of Chile
- Emmanuel Lebrun-Damiens, Consul General of France
- Washington Governor Jay Inslee (remotely)
- Oregon Governor Kate Brown (remotely)
Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Chile, Patricio Utreras, spoke in support of the OA Alliance as a crucial initiative to protect Chilean coastline and about the impacts of ocean acidification to the seafood and fisheries economy. He also spoke about the importance of successfully implementing the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Emmanuel Lebrun-Damiens, the Consul General of France, said, “We must respond to this major environment and economic threat” calling the OA Alliance “a great example of needed momentum which will lead us a step further.”
Governor Jerry Brown, speaking last (and pictured at the podium above) noted we were meeting during, “a time of real change” and that, “we must take action wherever we are…the threat of ocean acidification is so pervasive and we must not wait for bold action elsewhere.”
